During this session Haiping and I discussed the email sent out and getting masters programs. I'm applying for programs in China and she is trying to get hers here, so we compared our experiences and I asked for advice. In China, teachers don't like writing recommendation letters for their students because often they have so many students they don't know the individuals. And I was explaining how most American teachers are willing to write students a recommendation letter. The class sizes are different and that is part of the reason, but she explained she asked for a recommendation letter from three teachers and only one was willing to write her a letter. Its very difficult to get to know the teachers in China because of the respect and expected behaviors. The relationships are different. It was interesting and enlightening as I prepare to travel abroad.
