On Wednesday February
15th I met up with my adult tutee Xiaoyu during her lunchtime at the
CIES house at 12:00. She needed help with some of her homework so she pulled
out some of her worksheets. One of her worksheets contained the word “though”
and its usage. She didn’t really understand why Americans say this word so
often and didn’t really understand when to use it. I told her Americans use it
as an afterthought. I proceeded to give her some examples to help her
understand better such as “I’m not sure I like my haircut though.” I explained
that I might have liked my haircut at first but now that I’m looking at it more
I don’t like it anymore and as an afterthought I can now use the word “though”
to add more detail to the sentence. In addition, she had a presentation she had
to present the next day and she wanted me to check over the grammar. Her main
grammar problems were verb tenses, so next time I’ll try to focus on those to
help her improve. We agreed to meet up next week.
