Rachael TS # 13

Today (3/1) I tutored Da-som. The focus was on technology, and I used this topic to give Da-som the opportunity to practice the simple future tense. I had a visual-only video prepared, showing 20 different ways that technology has changed our lives. I provided some vocabulary pertaining to the stuff she'd see in the video (keyboard, robot, typewriter, software, download, etc) and we went over it together before watching the video to build some schema. After watching the video, I gave her three minutes to plan a paragraph on one area technology will change our lives in the future. After 3 minutes, I checked in with her, and she chose communication. I gave her 10 minutes to write, and 2 minutes to self-edit. I had her read it aloud to me. She really did a great job, coming up with about six complete sentences. She did a great job using the future tense in each sentence, the only real errors she made were dropping articles here and there (a common mistake for Korean students since articles don't exist in their native language) and using the wrong form of a word, (ex. we will communication vs. we will communicate). After the writing activity, I did a speaking activity with her. I printed out a gameboard-type thing where we would roll a die (which turned into flipping a coin after my internet crashed) and ask each other questions about the future, such as "What will some popular jobs be in 2050? and "What will you be doing in 10 years?" This took up the rest of the lesson. I was impressed with Da-som's ability to self-correct her speech. I only had to correct her or remind her to throw in a preposition or use a future tense a handful of times. Overall, I think this was one of the more skill based lessons I've prepared for Da-som, where as previously some of my lessons had been more topic based. Next week, I have another game prepared to help her practice giving and asking for advice. It should be engaging, while working on a really specific skill.
