On Wednesday, January
18th, I met up with my tutee Xiaoyu after a 10-minute break at
4:30-5:30. We continued to go through the questions on the tutoring guidelines
worksheet. She lives with her boyfriend, who is a TA in the statistics
department. He is also Chinese, and has been in America for the past four to
five years. She moved to America just to be with him. At home, she told me they
only speak in Chinese. Her boyfriend’s English is really good, but he doesn’t
want to teach her the wrong things in English so he prefers to use Chinese at
home. She thinks Tallahassee is quite small comparing to China because
everything is spread out and you can’t just walk to places and have to drive.
But overall she likes Tallahassee and likes the weather. She told me she liked
reading and writing, but her speaking and listening skills aren’t as good. I
told her I have the same problem when I learn Chinese, and the best thing to do
to improve these skills is to just practice and speak as much as you can
without fear of making mistakes. She agreed with me and said she would try to
speak more. We get along really well and I’m glad she’s my tutee. I am
excited to continue to tutor her and we have decided to meet up every
Wednesday, but for 2 hours each time because she is very busy, and I also have
a busy schedule.
