Julia Smith TS #15 & 16

Today, March 4 Laura and I tutored our child refugee family from 12:00-2:00. First we reviewed colors (again), played the same circle game as last week, and did the same with the numbers. We then played a bingo game using the vocabulary words that we had taught including verbs, colors, numbers and body parts. It was more difficult than we thought it would be, and the children had trouble finding the words on their bingo sheets. We then wanted to do something active, and so I held up a number (1-20) and they had do to the appropriate amount of jumping jacks, high knees or push-ups. They seemed to really enjoy this activity and we had a lot of fun with it.
Next we taught a few basic emotions and correlating actions, such as: happy and smile, sad and cry, mad and frown, and tired and sleep. We used a face that I have where you can change the shape of the mouth, nose and eyebrows in order to express the different emotions. We ended the session by teaching outdoor words such as tree, flower, sun, grass etc. and we all drew pictures of an outdoor scene. I realized the influence of modeling in this activity when the children based what type of flower that they drew based on how Laura and I drew ours. It was a successful day of learning and fun, and we ended up staying late drawing with them.
