Joelle TS #14

I met with Mohammad on Wednesday for a two-hour tutoring session. For the first half of our session, we went over vocabulary. For vocabulary, we went over the section in his homework that covered basic English phrases. I would ask Mohammad what the certain word meant. Often he would know, but there were a few he didn't know. For example, the word "Rose." He knew that Rose could mean a type of flower, but he didn't know that Rose also meant when someone or something rises up. I would explain to him multiple definitions of the word, and how the context of the sentence distinguishes what definition of the word works best for the sentence. The other words that had multiple meanings that he didn't know were: Blue (sad and a color), and Light (he knew that it was a type of light source, but he didn't know that light also meant a weight type). He also knew Through meant to go through something, but he didn't know Threw meant to move something, and confused the two as they sound similar in pronunciation. We went over other vocabulary, and I focused on his weak areas by asking him questions on paper such as "I don't feel good today, I am sad, I am _____" and he would fill the blank in with the correct word. In this case, the word was "Blue."
