Outside and Family
For our last hour, we gave the kids pen and paper, and tried to teach them emotions and family members. To do this we first taught them basic emotions. Julia had a prop for that and they understood very quickly. So then we had them practice making complete sentences. "Julia is happy, Laura is sad, You are angry." This went pretty well. So we taught them more emotions and more actions, like laughing and crying. We were able to give them a practice sentence and correct their errors immediately.
Lastly we had them draw an outdoor scene and taught them to label it. We used flowers, trees, and weather. They loved drawing and it got them focused. And sometimes they would draw something we hadn't learned so we would teach it to them then. They got to practice saying what color the object was that they drew, so they practiced complete sentences and colors and the new nouns. The hardest part about tutoring was knowing what to teach them. We tried to find high frequency words and fun activities to learn the words. The kids were very patient and eager to learn. I learned a lot about how to work with kids and students and how to improvise a lesson when it doesn't go as planned. The tutoring was really interesting and a great experience.
