On Thursday March 3rd
I met with my adult tutee Xiaoyu in Dirac at 3:20. She first showed me her
article for her reading class that was part of a novel. It was called “The Open
Window.” It was kind of like a scary mystery story. She had some vocabulary questions
that I answered to the best of my abilities. This article was good practice for
her extensive reading because I think she knew most of the words within the
reading. She then asked me about one of the comprehension questions regarding a
sequence of events in the story and the climax. I asked her if she knew what
the climax of a story was, and she kind of knew but not fully. So then I asked
her if she knew the dramatic structure of short stories and she said she didn’t.
So I drew out a diagram of the structure so she could physically see it, and then
proceeded to tell her what each one was. I used the parts of the story to help
her understand what exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution
are. After this, we took a short break and continued our session at 4:30.
