On Wedneday,
January 25 from 12:00-1:00pm, I met up with my conversation partner Luo Yi at Suwannee
dining hall to eat lunch. We decided to go to Suwannee because it was on campus
and we both had classes that day so it was the most convenient place to meet
up. She brought her friend Simon with her, who is also Chinese. He introduced
himself to me as well. He is also studying statistics, except he is trying to
get his PhD. He has been in America for the past few years and enjoys living in
Tallahassee. I am glad Luo Yi brought him along because he is a really nice guy
and really talkative. Luo Yi is more shy, but having the extra person there helped
the conversation to flow more smoothly. One of the first things we talked about
was the food. Both Luo Yi and Simon basically got the same thing to eat. They
chose the barbecue tofu and noodles for lunch, while I chose chicken noodle
soup and a sandwich. They told me tofu is a really common dish in China, and
let me try some of theirs. We all agreed the barbecue tofu was tasty. In
return, I told them that in America, chicken noodle soup is a common dish to
eat while someone is sick. Because I was sick all that week, I told chicken
noodle soup is my favorite thing to eat when I don’t feel well. In addition,
Simon was also curious about me. So I introduced myself to him and told him I
was a Chinese major. He then asked to see my book, and he also enjoyed looking
through it like Luo Yi did. I told him my Chinese name and he said my
pronunciations are good, but I told him I didn’t agree and that I want to
practice more to better my Chinese. Both Luo Yi and Simon said Chinese is a
very difficult language to learn, but practice makes perfect. They offered to
help me with my Chinese at any time, and I said they can text me whenever they
need help or have an English question. I had class soon after lunch though, so
I had to say goodbye in order to not be late to class. It was a really fun
second meet up, and we agreed to meet up the following week.
