Rachael TS # 15

On Tuesday (3/7), I tutored Matt who is making some significant progress! We mostly worked on reading skills, and his mom brought me a little book from his school. The words in the book were short, but focues on the "short i" and the "g" consanant sound. He did a really great job with this, though it took a little longer to get through than I had predicted. The next activity I had prepared for Matthew was a bag full of words. I had initially intended to use them to build short sentences, but he seemed to be on a roll with practicing pronounciation. The words were short, such as small, tall, apple, pen, tree, car, cheese, etc. I noticed a box in the foundations room full of word cards that might be better to help him make sentences than the rag-tag set of words I threw together. After today's lesson, I'm really getting the vibe that speaking and reading skills are the two areas I should target the most. He's really shown a lot of improvement in the domain of speaking in full sentences vs. one or two-word phrases. I think with young kids I have to be a little strict and establish clear behavior expectations. I am going to go to the library next time and pick out a book for him to read, one he has never seen before as a challenge. I think he can do it! I'm so proud of all the progress he's made.
