Kersten CO #3

I observed Professor Victoria Davis’ level 3 reading class on Wednesday, February 1 from 11:00-11:30am. She started out the class with an introduction. She had me introduce myself, and then had the students tell me their names, and where they are from. I thought this was really welcoming, and I enjoyed hearing about where each student came from. Going through the introductions, I noticed that my adult tutee, Xiaoyu, was also in this reading class. She greeted me when she introduced herself, it was a nice surprise.

After the introduction, she then went over a previous assignment concerned with note taking. Once students read the previous assignment, she then went over comprehension questions with them. Previously in the week, the CIES students had the opportunity to visit the magnet lab on FSU campus. Because of this little field trip, the teacher also handed out an article about the magnet that they saw while on the field trip. She handed me a copy to read as well, and it was more advanced than I thought it would be. Since the article was for upper immediate students, she spent the rest of the time letting the students read the article and answer the comprehension questions on this article located on the next page. She apologized to me for not really having an exciting class that day, but I told her not to worry because I was still learning a lot. She told me she has the students participate in reading logs every week, sometimes the students get to choose the topic, and sometimes the teacher chooses the topic. After completing a reading log in TEFL class, I know that these are a great tool to help students improve their reading skills.

In addition, she also handed out a copy of the book “Frindle” to students to read for 10 minutes at the end of class, but unfortunately time ran out and the students did not get to read the book that day. She told me reading this book allows students to practice their extensive reading skills. I remember reading this book back when I was younger, and absolutely loving it. I know this book will definitely help students improve their reading skills, and I hope they enjoy the book as much as I did.
