On Wednesday, January 18th, I met with my tutee
Liu Xiaoyu at 3:20pm. We met at
Dirac library and had a great conversation. Our conversation subject matters
ranged anywhere from favorite foods, to how many pets we owned. We started out
by introducing ourselves and I went through all the questions on the example sheet
given. She is from Anhui province in China and recently moved to the United
States in December. She has one
sister, which I thought was interesting because of the one child policy in
China only allowing families to have one child. She told me that if you pay
extra money you’re allowed to have a second child. She has been learning
English since she was young, but in China she did not have a chance to practice
her spoken English. Chinese is her
first language that speaks, and she only speaks Chinese and English. Although
her oral speech sometimes has some grammatical errors, overall I think her
English is really good. She has a wide range of vocabulary and I know I can
help her improve her grammar. At this
point we had already been talking for an hour because our conversation was
going so well. So we decided to take a little break and start a second session
at 4:30.
