Last Wednesday (3/1), I went back to the house with all of the refugee students. I learned that they aren't all related, some of the children are from Uganda and others are from Tanzania. Today was particularly challenging because there were 12 rowdy kids and just 2 of us. We had a handout ready to go with the different daily activities (brush your teeth, comb hair, make the bed, etc). This activity was difficult because the students are all of different levels and ages, and figuring out where the middle is seems difficult. Even after modeling the activity we wanted them to do (use words without saying the actual phrase) in order to get the other children to guess what the activity was. The next activity we did was to do with prepositions. We used some cans and placed them around the room in order to demonstrate how to appropriately use prepositions (above, under, on, in, behind, in front of). The children took turns putting the cans somewhere and having the other children properly describe where they are. This activity was too easy for some, so to add a little challenge we incorporated the use of "this, that, these, and those" into the exercise.
The oldest student, who is from Uganda, was very interesting and told us about how people of different religions get along relatively well in Uganda. He seemed to be a very religious young man and it was cool to see how excited he, and the other children, were for church. I look forward to continuing working with these children.
