Justin Stevenson TS#3

Tutee: Jenitha Kameli
Date: Jan. 23
Time: 8-9 a.m.
Location: Jenitha's office
Topic/Skill: Prospectus writing/editing
Feedback provided to tutee: I read a few pages of the tutee's writing and gave her notes on how to revise her paper.
Lessons about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: I learned that, while the tutee had a firm grasp of English, she tended to write as informally as she spoke. Moreover, I learned that it can be tricky teaching academic writing because there may be nothing incorrect with a tutee's grammar. For example, turns of phrase and descriptive writing, while fine to use in just about any context, in academic writing in the U.S, they are not appreciated. This brings up a cultural context that need be explained; that is, in scientific writing, the reader expects the writer to be as specific and straightforward (boring) as possible so as to be able to easily replicate the researcher's study--and, hopefully, results.
