On Thursday March 3rd
I met with my adult tutee Xiaoyu in Dirac from 4:30-5:30. After our short
break, she then pulled out another worksheet that had the words “yet” and “already”
on it. She didn’t understand the difference between the usage of the two words.
So I told her that yet is asking or saying about something in the future, while
already is used for something that has happened in the past. I told her example
sentences like “My birthday already happened” and “My birthday hasn’t happened
yet” so she could see the difference. I then asked her to provide me with
example sentences as well to make sure she understood the difference. She gave
me good sentences which let me know that she did understand. She also had
another worksheet for her listening class where the teacher said a sentence
orally and the students then had to copy down the sentence, and then make a sentence
with the same meaning but using different words. Essentially she had to find
synonyms for these sentences. She was really good with thinking of synonyms
because her English vocabulary is vast. We agreed to meet twice next week.
