On Wednesday,
February 1st I continued my session with my adult tutee Xiaoyu from 4:30-5:30
in Dirac. We continued to go over the worksheets she needed help on. One of the
main things she didn’t understand from one of her worksheets was the “what-if”
statement. In Chinese, they don’t really have an exact equivalent, but I tried
looking up the closest thing. I also gave her example sentences to help her
understand better. I told her that what-if sentences are sentences containing
scenarios that may or may not happen. For example, “What if it rains? You
should bring an umbrella.” I told her they’re similar to just saying if. But I
also told her a good word to use is “suppose.” To make sure she understood, I
told her to give me a few sentences using the what if structure. She then gave
me a few examples hat showed me she understood. This was a good session and we
agreed to meet up again next week.
