On Monday, February
6th I met my child tutee Kavira from 4:30-5:30 for the first time at
her house. She is the sweetest child, and was really shy at first. When I first
showed up, we just started playing with the balls they had. She told me how to
pronounce her name, and I told her to call me Kiki because it’s easier to
pronounce. She also told me she was in first grade. In addition, another little
boy in the family also played with us. Both of them seem to be more hands on
learners, so I decided to teach them numbers using the ball and dribbling. I
would count to 10, and for each dribble say a number. They both seemed to
really like this and caught on quickly. I also held up my fingers to help them
count, but this confused them a little after I got to five. I could only teach
them basic phrases because they are both the younger ones in the family. Kavira
told me she was seven and the other little boy was even younger. But because
they are so young, they learn very quickly. Whenever I say a word, they can
repeat the word after me perfectly and their pronunciations are really good. I’m
excited to continue to tutor them and see how much they can learn.
