I had my last session with Pasos for the TEFL 120 certificate on Monday. This will not be my last session with him however, as I plan to meet with him at least once a week until I graduate. On Monday we went over his homework. Pasos was distracted by the activity in the house and it was hard for him to concentrate. The homework we went over was not English homework, it was his math homework. It was actually very depressing to see that his school does not even slightly cater to his English needs. The math homework was typical of any 4th grader, and consisted of math involving fractions, angles, and word problems. It was very hard explaining to Pasos these math terms, as he didn't understand what a "Part" meant. How is he supposed to know what a fraction is if he doesn't understand what the English word "Part" means? It was sad, but I was able to help Pasos with basic numbers and addition and subtraction as he knew how to count to 20. We made some progress and I helped him understand the difference between a right, obtuse, straight, and acute angle by drawing the angles and quizzing him on the material.
We also went over word problems and I would explain to him what they meant by "1/4 of a mile" and "0.75 of a minute" as best as I could. I have hope Pasos will eventually understand as he's a smart child. After we finished part of his homework we went outside to play as Pasos was getting tired and frustrated. I hope that with my help Math and English will become a more positive experience for him.
