It was such a pleasure to meet my conversation partner, Naty. We went out to get the best chai lattes in Tallahassee (I promise) and had a conversation about the cultural differences between Burkina Faso and the United states. Naty told me that she thinks Americans and Moroccans are more altruistic than the people in her home country and shared her surprise about the cost of living here. We complained about the difficulties of learning a new language, including how hard they are to understand outside of a classroom setting. I explained to her that sometimes we get lazy and don't correctly pronounce the "t" in words like "water" and "waiting," which was a source of confusion for her. She thought that she was wrong for pronouncing her "t's" so strongly after she noticed that I was not.
