Today I met my CIES Tutee, Sultan Alajyan. Sultan is from Kuwait and is Twenty-two years old. His father is a doctor and a general in the Kuwaiti army, and his mother does not work. The purpose of today's session was for us to briefly learn  about each other, and for me to assess his proficiency level so that I could accurately prepare level-appropriate activities that would help him meet his goals. Right away, it was clear that Sultan's level of English proficiency was at a very foundational level. He had only been in America for around fourteen days, and had apparently never studied the language before. Because of this, I used google translate to communicate more complex messages (such as scheduling and other things), and had to adjust my speech rate tremendously in order to be understood. Still, Sultan displayed a clear motivation to learn and achieve his goals of eventually getting a degree from an American University. I look forward to watching him progress.
