Today, I met with my adult tutee. He is a young man from Kuwait who speaks Arabic and English. He has been in the United States since October of last year, and likes to play soccer, and watch movies. His motivation to study English is to gain admission to a university that teaches computer and civil engineering. He is an intermediate student who enjoys grammar and listening. He does not like reading and writing. As this was our first session together, I attempted to assess his tutoring needs by asking what he hopes to gain from this experience. His only request was that I assist him with conjugating the verb "have". Eagerly, I began to teach the student what little knowledge I had acquired from class. After we worked on conjugations, I tried to create a dialogue utilizing the use of the verb "have".
It has now been hours since our first session ended, and I am still not sure how the student felt about it. Honestly, I had a hard time determining if I gave him the answer he was looking for. His response was neither passionate nor withdrawn. I guess for the remainder of the session, it is my hope that I can strike up a relationship with this student, and find material to further his development. Since I fulfilled his only request, I'm hoping that as the session progresses, he will have more questions for me to answer. Otherwise, I will try to find things to teach him that he doesn't know he needs.
