Julia Smith CP #1

On January 18th, I met with my conversation partner, Sheila for the first time. We walked together form CIES to Starbucks, while introducing ourselves and getting to know each other. From the time spent with Sheila, I was able to create an idea of where her English level is. I also asked her if there was a certain aspect of the language that she would like to work on, to which she responded with mostly grammar and speaking. I plan to help her with grammar by repeating after her with any corrections and explaining the correction if needed. I found that the reason for some confusion in speaking for her was from either mispronunciation of a word, or an incorrect knowledge of the word itself, such as its spelling or a verb conjugation. She would sometimes apologize if she stumbled or would say something wrong, so one of my goals will be to try and create an open, judgement-free atmosphere so that she is comfortable making mistakes. I am excited to meet more with Sheila and see the progress that she makes, as well as get to know her more by doing different activities together around town.
