Today I completed the first tutoring session with my adult student. Morinao is a Japanese student who is struggling with his speaking ability. Although he has been in the United States for a few years, he seems to have plateaued in his speaking ability and is having trouble with sentence structure and speaking fluency. Like many Japanese and Korean students, he understands and knows basic English grammar rules yet still has trouble when it comes to fluent speech. We spoke about some of his strengths and weaknesses and discussed possible methods that we could use to improve his sentence structure and fluency. During our next session, I am going to introduce basic sentence structure with an emphasis on prepositions and then role play some speaking scenarios.
