On Monday, Larissa (one of my adult tutees) discussed listening. For her listening class, she had to do a listening log in which she had to choose a topic, write down and describe new vocabulary words, and give a summary of the speech sample that she listened to. Larissa chose the topic: "what makes others happy". Since she could not find a speech sample online, I told her what personally makes me happy. While she listened to me speak, she wrote down the vocabulary words that she was unfamiliar with. She also gave a summary of the things that I said. The assignment was rather extensive for Larissa, and she was able to employ top-down listening as opposed to bottom-up listening. The session was rather fruitful.
