Date: February 16, 2017
Time: Noon
Location: Hecht House Student Lounge
Topic/Skill: Simple Present vs. Present Continuous, asking questions in present continuous, and making present continuous statements negative

Feedback:Yesterday my tutee forewarned me of his study intentions. This was great because I was able to prepare a well thought out lesson as opposed to explaining a grammar topic briefly after some research. Although it is great to show the student how to teach themselves, it also minimizes the amount of time the tutor can spend teaching.

Today I really got a chance to give an in-depth review of different contexts for the grammar in use. I first reviewed present tense conjugations (conjugate he/she/it, with ies, es, or s). Then we learned present continuous and applied it in context (be + ing, be + subject + ing, and be + not + ing). Afterwards, we focused on distinguishing between when to use present tense vs. present continuous.

Lesson learned: The biggest lesson I learned from this experience is that preparation adds much more depth to a tutoring session. Although this experience is ideal, it may not be practical either. With the quick-paced environment that CIES provides, students make great strides in their early grammar knowledge. If a tutor only meets with a tutee weekly, a lesson prepared may not be the lesson needed.
