Feedback: Today the student asked about his pronunciation of the short e and short i sounds. Much like we discussed in class, I helped him to see when to determine the long and short sounds of each letter. It seemed like he understood the reasons, so I then tried to find a way for him to remember the sound itself. For short i, I likened it to the "ick" sound when we are disgusted. For the short e sound, I made a dismissive "eh whatever" comment. After working on that, we practiced memorizing past participles for for the present perfect tense. Then I quickly tested him on pronunciation again. This time, he seemed to do much better.
Lesson learned: What was enforced in my teaching experience today, was that students may know the rules for speaking and not know how to produce it. By taking time to make the sound relatable, the student was able to reproduce the sound without hesitation. Sometimes, its not what is known that is the problem, but rather what is not known. In this case, he couldn't remember the short sounds even though he knew that the words required them.
