Topic/Skill: Prompted speaking, elaborating on our ideas
Feedback provided to the tutee: My tutee is very bright and studious. However, in his responses he tends to be brief and too the point, which leaves little room to clearly capture his spoken abilities. Because of this, my feedback was all about elaborating on his ideas. An example I used was "I like the Toyota, Camry." It is not enough to say that I like the car, I should also try to say why I liked the car. By stating why, I'm opening up the dialogue and giving others a chance to engage with me.
Lessons I learned: Right after I saw my tutee, our class discussed how to respond to oral testing prompts. It discussed the format of presenting your idea and giving supporting examples. I think that this structure would have helped much more than my round-about way of getting him to tell me more. In our tutoring session, I was often feeding him more questions in hopes that he could learn to foresee future questions.
