Listening

Today's listening exercise consisted of reading a prepared paragraph to my 2T. I read it through once, slowly. I read it through a second time, a little faster. At the end of the second reading, I asked him questions about the content. We discussed the answers. I provided linguistic support as necessary. Of the 8 questions 2T was able to respond correctly or adequately to all 8, even though he did not know the meaning of some of the vocabulary when he did. One example of this was his response to the question: "Name three of Bob's past jobs." One he chose to respond with was "changing the big tires on 18-wheelers." Lord knows why! He had no idea what that string of words meant! However, he grasped from the context that it was a job and was a proper response to the question. Top down? You betcha! We hammered the vocabulary into submission and he was able to explain in his own words what a truck stop tire buster does. We also had a little trouble with the "North Pole" and "Ice cap" when discussing submarining. New vocabulary beyond that I had introduced through the lesson popped up throughout the session. 2T exhibits the behavior of a visual learner so I incorporated a portable white board into the session. This was helpful for new vocabulary particularly that which emerged unplanned in discussion. The level seems about right judging from 2T's response and balance of familiar and unfamiliar vocabulary. I recorded the new vocabulary and will review it in the next session.
