Sabrina TS#3

I met with my child tutee for the second time on Saturday, January 28. We did well with the reading materials during our last session so I was looking forward to the next passage! I first chatted with PJ about his week and what he did in his classes. We then started the passage, which was about snow crystals and their formation. This story didn't captivate PJ as much as the last story had (probably because of the nonfiction genre) but I made an effort to get him more interested in the material by showing him on the map what parts of America were currently snowing and showing him a youtube video of ice crystal clusters forming on a bubble (youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZeUBNcQY7Q). I thought this multimodality would help him engage with the material more. PJ decided to read the entire story out loud by himself this time as well, so I helped him with some of the concepts that he seemed to gloss over while he was reading. Overall I think PJ did well reading and understanding what he was reading. This passage was quite a bit longer than the passage we reviewed during our last session though, so we did not get a chance to review the story and talk about it or answer questions. I decided to begin the next session with a review of this story to make sure he was okay with the content in the passage.
