Sabrina TS#5

I met with my child tutee, PJ, for the third time yesterday, February 11. We didn't get a chance to see each other last week because my car broke down en route, so I was excited to get started again. He seemed to have a lot of energy that morning (when I pulled up to the house he was outside practicing soccer tricks) so I was a bit worried he wouldn't be able to focus but he ended up doing well. I had already decided during our last tutoring session that we would review and discuss the story he read last time because it was a longer passage and we didn't get a chance to discuss it. We first reviewed the material about ice crystals and talked about what he learned. We then played a game, Hangman, and in it we each chose key words from the story and guessed what words they were based on clues we gave to each other. For example, one of the words that PJ chose was 'bumps', and he gave me explanations of how bumps form on certain snow crystals so that I would guess the answer. I then reciprocated with another word and explanations for him to guess. I think this was a good exercise to get him engaged in the material, recall the concepts in the text, and have an opportunity to explain what he learned! For the next session we are going to move on to the next story but I might bring back this exercise in the future because he seems to like it as a way to review.
