Feedback provided:Today I met with my new tutee. I am not sure I really gave him much feedback. He has autism and comes from a very large family. When I entered their home, there weren't any adults present. I tried very hard to get his attention but, it seemed that his family did not have expectations for him to study. Although I tried to focus on him, I really ended up teaching his siblings words that they wanted to know about everyday life.
Lesson learned: Today I learned more about culture than I did teaching. I had a bout of culture shock as I entered a home with no adult supervision. I also ended up leaving way later than I expected because I was nervous about leaving them unattended. I realize that if the family believes their children are capable of being left alone, then I should respect this judgement. However, personally I had a hard time doing it. I guess, this experience gave me perspective on how internationals feel in America everyday; not quite comfortable with social norms and uneasy about letting their own judgment go.
