Needs Assessment, Colors

Julia and I went at the same time to meet with the family, and at first had a little bit of trouble communicating with them. But we started by going through the alphabet and we slowly realized what they knew and what they might need more help with. Julia help the younger siblings go through the alphabet and learn the colors, while I sat with Abu and we talked about a couple of things. I tried to get him to use complete sentences and point to things and say, "the car is blue." Or similar simple sentences. He knows a lot of high frequency words, and just needs to put them into sentences. Near the end we started talking about soccer, and he knew a lot of the names and positions. He was able to tell me his favorite players and the players he didn't like. It was a really interesting experience, and next time I will definitely try to help him work on conversation. I think he is able to read and write at an age appropriate level, but his speaking needs more help. He was also able to understand me if he knew the words, and I was able to use google translate a little bit to help him if he needed to learn a new word. The kids are really smart and I saw how the language acquisition device is going to help them learn. We tried to speak in complete sentences, basic ones, and repeat the names of things to help them hear the proper pronunciation and be able to repeat after us. I'm excited to go back and tutor them!
