SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THOSE WHO HAVENT SEEN LA LA LAND
But the spoilers are important to discuss this time around because if the film's ending had me confused, surely it would have my non native English speaker conversation partner as well. Generally throughout the film we were talking about the romance development between Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone's character. Essentially they were two different "artists": one who dreamed of opening his own jazz club to revive the world of jazz, the other an actress who dreamed of writing her own roles. They were two people that spend the whole movie pushing and supporting each other to make their dreams come true. And no doubt they have their shortcomings and an eventual real bad fallout where the both of them almost completely give up on their dreams. But in the end, there's this finishing number (as it is a musical) that starts back at the beginning and refigures the whole film as if the fallout hadn't happened, that they had supported each other 100% since the moment they met, and that they end up together. And this was confusing in my mind as well as my CP because we couldn't figure out what the real ending was to the film. It wasn't until I did my research afterwards on the film that I messaged my CP that this alternate ending we saw is what would have been the expected happily ever after ending from Hollywood. Which they didn't give to us. They gave us La La Land.
