Simon Kennell TS #7

Today I met with my child tutee for the first time. Victor is a child refugee from the Sudan. I had a great time getting to know him and the whole family. When I arrived, I tried to set up a session based mostly on reading and writing for assessment. I quickly realized that this sort of work during a first meeting was not a good idea because Victor and his siblings could not sit still and it was a distracting atmosphere. I decided instead that we would go outside with a basketball and a football and talk while throwing them around. This turned out to be a much better idea as Victor became much more open and I could get a better idea of his English level. I am currently trying to get a lesson plan set for him for the next couple of weeks. This is much different than tutoring adults because there are several additional factors that have to be taken into account.
