Time: 1:30 pm - 3:30pm
Location: Their house
Topic/Skill: The senses and household objects
Feedback
provided: Last week I noted that the children knew the parts of the body fairly well. To capitalize on their prior knowledge and build schema, I chose to discuss our senses. We started with a quick game of head, shoulders, knees, and toes. Then, I drew parts of the body and modeled the difference senses. Afterwards, I slowly gave my students objects to induce kinesthetic responses. I used a pencil sharpener for sound, modeling clay for touch, chocolate for taste, drawings for seeing, and a car freshener for smell. Somethings served mixed purposes. Then, I provided the adults with more practical assistance by helping them to identify household items they sought at the grocery store.
Lesson
learned: Last week things started off shaky. I did not meet the parents and felt very uneasy about having entered a home without an adult present. Unlike last week, the parents were home and they seemed just as eager as the children to learn English. Although I did take cultural differences into account, my emotional response still caused me to hesitate to return. I'm glad that I gave things a second shot because I feel like I really made a difference in that family's day.
I also feel like this type of activity sparked the autistic child's attention. Although he didn't make much effort to communicate, he did participate the entire time. I take this as improvement.
