Aileen TS#6
For the second half of the session in order to not bog down my child tutee by just asking him questions in English I asked his brother if they had any reading material or books from school. He managed to bring out some superhero books during the first round which led us to talk about his favorite superheroes. I took this as a perfect opportunity to teach them high-frequency verbs that would connect their personal lives to their favorite heroes thus stimulating their intrinsic motivation to learn the words. These words included to run, to jump, and to fly. Knowing that having access to natural samples of the English language is imperative to that comprehensible input I had my tutee read along with me word by word of both a Superman and Spiderman book. I then followed up by narrating it myself with a natural rate of speech, making sure to enunciate clearly. We then followed up by reading a Curious George book with the simple premise that Curious George goes to visit a chocolate factory. This time around after I read aloud and had my tutee read aloud with me I followed up by providing visual aids so that even if he didn't know necessarily what was going on he could get the gist of it by the main pictures that I would draw. In this case the main images were "monkey" "chocolate bunny" "lollipop" and "candy cane" As our session was finishing up I saw that his brother had brought out two more Curious George books. For our next session I will probably use my same strategy whilst continuing to provide visual cues and aids for these Curious George books.
