Today, on February 14th, Dojun and I met for the fifth time. In the previous session I had noted that Dojun confused the words 'could' and 'should' sometimes, and so I prepared a lesson about modal verbs for this week. I used the deductive approach by beginning with a set of questions that required the use of modal verbs, then I introduced him to the lesson and worksheet. I knew that he had learned these words before, and so I used it mostly as a tool for reiteration and to ask him if he had any questions about the words and their uses. I found that the biggest problem with these words was knowing when to use the words appropriately, and there was not much problem with grammar or syntax regarding these words. We discussed some of the words he had questions about, and I asked him a few questions where he had to use these modal verbs. Since it is Valentine's day, we then talked about the different customs for Valentine's day, and he told me that in South Korea, the woman only buys them man somethings, which is usually chocolates. I enjoyed learning about some cultural differences, and he seems to enjoy sharing and learning as well.
