Aileen TS#9
I met up with my Skype tutee on Monday morning and today's topic started off with k-drama. My initial plan was to ask him what some of his favorite dramas were and going off of that I was going to ask him to design his own drama as if he were the protagonist...but instead we ended up off in a tangent comparing going to the movies in the US versus in South Korea. I learned that my tutee is actually an avid movie goer (I say avid compared to me- he goes to the movies twice a month) due to discount deals he receives from his mobile network. He explained to me how it worked and I found it pretty fascinating how personally integrated companies have become with our lifestyle: he told me that through his mobile network you had the option to pick one of 3 perks: 1. Starbucks discount on Americanos 2. Discount movie tickets 3. Discount on train passes. He went on to ask me which out of the 3 I would pick and that choice alone (Starbucks discount as a very recent grad? Yes please) lead us to talk about our time at university whether it was the same universally when it came to experiencing all-nighters. Overall, I really enjoyed this session because we were both really able to exchange meaningful perspectives on movies, university life, and how media plays a huge part in both of our cultures whether it be for the better or for the worse. These are the types of conversations he'll be able to tackle more comfortably when he wants to strike a conversation with the foreign clients in the workplace, thus boosting that intrinsic motivation.
