I met with my tutee, Sheila, for lunch on Monday, January 16. We went to Chipotle and sat for about two hours. we went over the needs assessment questionnaire and talked about her experience in America. She told me she wanted help with composition, but we also had a little bit of trouble communicating so I will help her with speaking and listening. She will need help broadening her vocabulary. I tried to help her with conjugating English verbs. We mostly discussed our families and her experience in America. I was able to compare my language learning experience to hers and help her. In the future I might need to give her more feedback because I think she doesn't have a good understanding of what she knows and what she doesn't know. She knows some grammar well and is able to communicate pretty well but she needs to learn more vocabulary. I'll need to provide a structure to help her learn and encourage her to spend more time reviewing outside of class. This will also help us avoid gaps in communication. Overall we should have a good time together! I'm excited to see her in the future.
